Equal parts backstage documentary and intimate diary film, and peppered with exuberant, choreography-intensive concert footage and some notable cameos, this film profiles trailblazing queer, Black, pop-hip hop sensation Montero Lamar Hill, better known as Lil Nas X. It follows him as he embarks upon the North America leg of his debut “Long Live Montero” concert tour in 2022.

Estrada (director of 2020’s Summertime, 2018’s Blindspotting and countless music videos) and award-winning cinematographer Manuel’s film is a salutary lesson in the benefits of authenticity and self-acceptance, and in the value of creating a chosen family as well as maintaining close ties with kith and kin. Recent and past musings from the film’s hyper-social media-savvy yet remarkably grounded subject are accompanied by testimonies from fans acknowledging his importance as a bridger of often disparate worlds, uniting Queer folk with Black and country music communities and spanning generational divides, notwithstanding smatterings of moral panic emanating from certain quarters.

Screening followed by pre-recorded Q&A with co-director / cinematographer Zac Manuel and MQFF Program Director, Cerise Howard.
