Festival Update

Hi all – are you aware that we’re practically five minutes away from opening night? (Give or take 60 days).

Things are roasting up like you cannot imagine. There are hysterical phone calls abound, film reels spewing from their canisters, unidentified objects flying around the office and random interns running up and down the corridors with gay abandon. But don’t be fooled; our calm, professional chic helps to maintain complete control. Honest.

So…..who’s going to spice up their life and volunteer for us this year? You will be guaranteed an amazing experience like no other. Just listen to these testimonials:

‘Volunteering for MQFF gave me the ride of my life’ – John, St Kilda
‘I saw lots of free films and got a sexy new t-shirt – my life is complete’ – Ann, Ivanhoe
‘I don’t think I’ll ever be the same again’ - Anonymous, Northcote

This could be YOU! New friends, new adventures, new lovers…..or perhaps old ones so you can finally get that closure you’ve always needed. Either way – we need you!

How to become a MQFF Vollie: Registrations open at Carnival, then after that all you need to do is hit our registration page online at our website. Registrations will be open until 22nd Feb. All your vollie info is located here as well.

Speaking of Vollie - the festival would like to welcom Ross Larkin as the festival's Marketing Intern. His imprint is all over this edition of 'buff'.

Carnival is SO this Sunday. And we KNOW you will be there in all your Midsumma glory, ready to visit the MQFF stall and chat to our vollies while learning about our unbelievable 60 prizes in 60 days competition. So remember to sign up for membership, ideally BEFORE Sunday so you don’t have to wait, and you can enter straight into the prize pool online from Sunday!

Speaking of prizes – there are so many give aways in this edition of buff, that you may need to sit down, regain your composure and wipe yourself off. But they didn't just fall out of the sky, so a big thanks goes to Love Films, ACMI, Madman Films, Pernac and Pink Sofa for their generous support.

Until next time,
Rowena, Alex and Ross.

(this edition of buff is so big it needed 3 editors!!)

Giveaways Galore

"WRANGLER:Anatomy of an Icon" DVD GIVEAWAY

Come on boys, who wouldn’t want a free DVD of tasty ‘70’s porn star Jack Wrangler, rippling with muscles of every kind? We have five sealed copies to give away! And you can’t just get it anywhere, y'know.

A crowd-pleaser at both Melbourne Queer Film Festival and Mardi Gras Film Festival this year, Wrangler: Anatomy of An Icon traces the life and career of 70s gay porn star Jack Wrangler.
Jack defined the 70’s muscle man aesthetic. He became a major brand name in adult entertainment, as well as a hero to the newly liberated gay population, which was just starting to come out of the closet.

With piercing blue eyes, unruly blond hair, a chiselled physique and cocky swagger, Jack Wrangler was beautiful, but he wasn’t the typical object of homoerotic desire. He was an intelligent, full-bodied, self-confident stud, and his career took him down a wild and unpredictable path. Packed with rare footage, celebrity interviews, and witty commentary by Wrangler himself, this is an unflinching portrait of a gay legend that broke all the rules.

To win one of 5 copies of Wrangler:Anatomy of an Icon, simply email your name, membership number and 'WRANGLER' in the subject line to info@mqff.com.au. Entries close 5pm on Monday January 18. All entries will go into a draw with the winners chosen at random and notified. If you don't win you can always buy the DVD from Hares & Hyena's and while you're there you can check out the rest of the titles from Love Films.

DENNIS HOPPER AND THE NEW HOLLYWOOD

This major exhibition of original artworks by the likes of Dennis Hopper and Andy Warhol is not to be missed. And up for grabs is not one, not five, but ten double passes. Get in quick!
A unique insight into the life and times of a living legend - his films, his art and his exceptional private collection.

Dennis Hopper & the New Hollywood takes you on a trip through the art and film that came to define a generation, a cultural storm ignited by Hopper’s own startling directorial debut Easy Rider (1969), inaugurating the ‘New Hollywood’ and elevating him as an icon of American counter-culture.

Universally recognised for his film work as an award-winning actor and director, Dennis Hopper’s prolific talents as an artist, photographer and art collector are less well known. Dennis Hopper & the New Hollywood is an exclusive showcase of Hopper’s own work – his films, his art and photography. It is also a unique opportunity to view part of his expansive private collection of contemporary art, including paintings, photographs and sculptures never before seen in public by artists such as Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Ed Ruscha and many more.

Open until Sunday 25 April 2010 at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Federation Square, Melbourne. www.acmi.net.au for details.

To win one of 10 double passes to Dennis Hopper & the New Hollywood, simply email your name, membership number and 'DENNIS HOPPER' in the subject line to info@mqff.com.au. Entries close 6pm on Monday January 18. All entries will go into a draw with the winners chosen at random and notified.

"IN THE LOOP" GIVEAWAY

"In The Loop" is a foul-mouthed comedy that draws on non-specific events to create a world that is terrifyingly familiar: The US President and UK Prime Minister fancy a war, but not everyone agrees that war is a good thing. US General Miller certainly doesn't think so and neither does the British Secretary of State for International Development.
Soon, the Brits are in Washington, where diplomatic relations collide with trans-Atlantic spin doctors, quickly spiraling into a mountain of conflict.

To win one of 5 double passes to In the Loop, simply email your name, membership number and 'LOOP' in the subject line to info@mqff.com.au. Entries close 6pm on Monday January 18. All entries will go into a draw with the winners chosen at random and notified.

A big thanks goes to our lovely friends at Madman Films for this one.

Lesbian Love

Wishing Well Productions are presenting A Narrow Time for Angels, a new Melbourne-made musical, and they're generously throwing a fundraiser performance for MQFF, Thursday 4th Feb @ 8pm.

A Narrow Time for Angels is an irreverent comedy; fast paced and sexy, with more than a hint of dark humour and a sprinkling of songs.

It is midnight at the morgue and Sam’s working overtime. When her routine autopsy is interrupted by Magnolia Ternback on a mysteriously morbid mission, they find themselves on a roller coaster ride of lost love, desperate acts, bubbling desire, betrayal and murder. Between love and hate, between midnight and morning, between death and heaven’s door…it’s a narrow time for angels.

Thursday 4 February, 8pm. Studio 2, Northcote Town Hall, 189 High Street Northcote. For information and tickets head to www.northcotetownhall.com.au or call (03) 9481 9500 and mention MQFF. For more information about the production contact wishingwellp@gmail.com or call 0417 161 098.
