Financial Viability and Sound Management
For the past 20 years, MQFF has demonstrated its ability to run the organisation in a professional manner with the vast majority of Festivals breaking even and/or making small profits. The Festival has excellent support from corporate sponsorship; indeed some corporate sponsors have been involved with the Festival for many years. The MQFF's finances are controlled by the Board in close consultation with the Treasurer who is a Board member.
Artistic and Corporate Objectives
Our artistic and corporate objectives are:
- • To continue to improve the quality of films shown at the Festival.
- • To provide a unique and innovative environment for screen culture.
- • To increase the diversity of film content.
- • To include foreign language films.
- • To continue the Festival's sound financial footing.
- • To continue to increase audience size to the full capacity of our venues.
- • To utilise state of the art film screening venues in the City of Melbourne.
- • To increase the diversity and age range of our audience.
- • To to make the Festival more accessible.
- • To continue to provide cash prizes for films.
- • To create a Festival that is exciting, intellectual and populist.
The core business of the Festival is film screenings which accounts for over 95% of the business and includes the main Festival held in March each year. The annual Festival includes programs such as Queeries: Youth Program, International Shorts and Feature Films, Documentary Packages, foreign language films, The City of Melbourne Emerging Filmmaker Award, an experimental program, along with several forums and lectures. International filmmakers and guests attend the Festival each year and are encouraged to contribute to the Festival by their involvement in forums and interviews with the media about their films or programs.
The Festival also holds screenings at the Fairfield Amphitheatre as part of the Midsumma Festival in January and February each year, called Movies Under the Stars. Throughout the year the Festival holds one-off screenings for its members and the general public at various venues around Melbourne.
The Program Launch which is the official launch of the Festival in February each year.
Main Client Base
The annual Festival's main client base includes members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (GLBTI) communities, film industry people, sponsors, media, film buffs and the general public. Many of these patrons who are from outer suburban and regional areas, as well as interstate, would not have the opportunity to see these films outside the Festival as they rarely receive commercial release.
It is estimated that since the Festival's inception 20 years ago, there has been over 200,000 partons who have enjoyed the Festival.
MQFF has been touring a substantial part of its program to Bendigo in regional Victoria for a number of years. In 2007 the MQFF toured program highlights to Cairns and Rockhampton, and in 2008 a highly successful Perth tour took place. It is hoped that given the success of touring to Perth and Bendigo, that the Festival will be able to respond to continued demand for touring to further locations throughout Australia in the future.
